About Grady's 2020-21 VIP Program

Mike Grady originally piloted a velocity development program for the first time in 2014 with 8 players, with each player gaining a significant increase in throwing velocity.  Since then, the program has changed to a complete off-season training program for pitchers that focuses on all areas of the game. The VIP Program is also designed to promote arm health and recovery. Each player must complete an extensive, dynamic warm up before throwing or training begins.  The combination of this individualized strength training, the development of a more efficient arm action, and improved overall throwing mechanics has resulted in significant increases not only throwing velocity, command, off-speed pitches, strength, and more. Over 100 pitchers participated in the program from all across the state of Ohio in 2019.

Focus on Proper Warm-Up and Arm Care

Each player completes a rigorous warm-up routine that includes active stretch, completing the Jaeger J-Band series, use of the shoulder tube, wrist weights, and more. Before players pick up a baseball, we ensure they are properly warmed up, reducing the risk of injury.

Additionally, players will complete specific strength exercises that target the shoulder and elbow. Players will also learn about mobility and be shown exercises designed to increase overall mobility, stability, and movement.

The purpose of the VIP is to help players achieve their maximum potential by creating a high intensity, researched-based training program that is individualized for each player. Areas of focus for each player are determined during the movement screening and throwing evaluation, which is completed before the program begins.

"The velocity program not only helped increase my velocity, but it also helped me develop good throwing habits through proper arm care and recovery. I gained a ton of knowledge from this program, and it made me a better pitcher." Ty Drabick, RHP,  Kent State University

High Intensity Ballistic Training

High intensity ballistic training allows players to generate maximum arm speed and greater intent levels using a variety of weighted baseballs. This part of the program is customized for each player and monitored by our coaches closely. Research shows that the use of weighted baseballs is effective at improving throwing velocity.

We will blend maximum intent pull down throws and pitching from the mound in order to teach players how to transfer their intent to the mound.

Integration of Data, Technology, and Personalized Coaching

Players have access to the latest pitching technology including Rapsodo and the Insight high-speed camera (see video to the right). The Rapsodo and camera technology allows coaches to more quickly identify both areas of strength and improvement.

Players will pitch from the mound during the last 5 weeks of training. In addition, catchers will catch live pens and hitters will hit live off pitchers to simulate game-like situations.

What others have to say:

"My son is in Grady's VIP program and this was his first time focusing on training to be a pitcher.  The program is exactly what you want, there is a movement screening, data driven approach to pitch design, mechanics, velocity , and command, along with strength training.  My son has improved his velocity, command, movement and off-speed pitches but most importantly he has improved how he thinks as a pitcher and how to actually pitch, not just throw.

My biggest takeaway from the program is that Mike and his coaches care about helping my son reach his goals and support him.  My advice to any parent is to sign your son up for the VIP program and make sure he follows it, you will not be sorry!" - Mike Hampu

"My first and lasting impression of Grady's Pitching School is the enthusiasm Mike and his instructors bring to EVERY lesson.  They genuinely interested in your players growth and improvement.  Mike isn't trying to make every pitcher throw the same way.  He analyzes and experiments with each pitcher, e.g. different release points, different grips, etc. to try and maximize their individual skills.  Mike's understanding of pitching and pitch design coupled with the technology is second to none.  Mike truly uses the technology to enhance the players' training experience.  A lot of young players don't understand or possess the self-awareness to make adjustments.  The technology and Mike's analysis with your player allows them to not only see what they are doing, but to see how the adjustments immediately impact the results." -Ian Schechterman
